How To Start Running, the tips

Get a good pair of running shoes.

Not sure what that means? Head to your local running store and get fitted. The running community is made of runners who come in all shapes, sizes, ages, and backgrounds. The last thing you have to worry about when you go to your local running store is having to prove to the people there that you run. They want you to run. It’s a judgment-free zone.

Ask all your questions.

Don’t be afraid of being a beginner.

It’s OK to know nothing.

It’s OK to tell them your budget. It’s OK to leave the store with a list of brands, shoe styles, and corresponding sizes without buying anything. Go online and shop around. No need to spend a bunch of money. Just make sure that wherever you buy your shoes, they come with at least a 30-day return policy so you can return them if they don’t feel right.

Set some realistic goals.

The best goal? Stepping out the front door and working to establish a routine. Make that the goal, not the run itself. Habits take time to develop. Start small by carving out time and showing up regularly.

GO SLOW.

Your pace will feel challenging regardless of how slow you go because running is hard. Just think slow, strong and steady. Slow = strong. SO MANY RUNNERS think running is about how fast you can go. Most of your running is supposed to be aerobic which means slow, strong, and steady. (TAKE THAT high school PE teachers. Slow is strong.)

Forward is a pace.

It may take longer than 8 weeks to build to a 5K. It may take less. That’s ok! If you fall off track or if life throws you a curveball, it’s okay to start over and pick up where you left off. If 8-weeks isn’t enough time, that’s ok. Repeat weeks but keep going. Forward is a pace.

Anyone can become a runner. You can become a runner. The fact that you’re here tells me everything I need to know. Now download our free plan, join our free online running community, and let’s do this.
